Just wanted to kick off this little forum with a kit I built last year.

The Ill fated Russian Sumarine Kursk, An amazing vessel brought to us by the Polish Firm of FlyModel.

Graphics are quite good, a step up from the usual hand drawn FlyModel kits, great detail and great printing

I would like to thank my former Co Worker, Darek for this kit. As a Polish guy working in Ireland I have to admit that he knew my taste in Card Models and was gracious to think of me on one of his trips home and was kind enough to pick me up a copy of the Model. I hope that he will enjoy his time in Ireland as much as I did during my time in NYC.

From the out set the kit looks great, Flymodel to me used to be Big Dumb kits, hand designed, multi coloured variances for ajoining pieces that should match (caused a lack of printing ability job) and low on details but you did get a big model....this kit seems so much more, Sharp, computer designed and just a kick ass subject.

I'm really not looking forward to the missile bays...they are quite repetitive and there are a lot of them...but thats quite a while away.

To begin the formers, 2mm card and plenty of it....Nothing special but I did appreciate a pair of Fiskars I picked up on Wal Mart.

Ive decided to colour the Missile bay as there was too much colour variation in the printing. This was on the paper sheets in the kit, the card seems to have great colour matching...no details lost, the colour was a nice Red Primer from a car shop...

Continued the formers along the entire length.. and wow its a long long model.... Ill need a bigged shelf...

I'm using coloured card for the joining strips....black and red for now, Im going to make a few of the front sections an dthe mount them on the formers as Im not sure where I should have begun "plating"...

for now I'll leave it at this

Thanks again Darek
Lets see what happens....

As with most card models the internal structure is the frame, attached to 2mm card via spray glue it is probably one of the most important steps to do, from start if you screw up here you are in for a world of hurt.

Of all the troublesome shapes in card modelling the underside of a hull is the worst and well a submarine is like two hull undersides ontop of each other.

Internal Structure:

Long view from stern, the kit at 1:100 will be 153 cm long

The missile bay, The Kursk was not like Red October, it was an anti shipping submarine capable of decimating Atlantic Convoys with a barrage of "Shipwreck" class missiles

I touched up the paint colour in the Missile bays as I want happy with the printed version,

The skin, it is important to match the model colour with the tab(Tabs are the bits that sit on the stucture and are used to step between skinned sections, otherwise you will end up with obvious white gaps between the gery or red sections of the hull plating

Putting a few of the sections together to make the bow before placing it onto the formers, Then I will work back from there

and on the formers:

Ok good night for now Comrades

John John

No pics!

This space is for rent.

Im trying to figure out if these pics are too big for you guys?

Ill continue with more of the hull palting:

A small hole fo rthe Forward Dive planes

Left and right sections down along the hull, trying to keep them aligned is priority

Now comes the problem of matching up sections that have a space between them, Im not sure if I want to have two complete weapons bay, the time and effort is one thing, but I think that the over-all submarine shape will be ruined and I am sure the doors will not close and match up enough to keep the top of the hull smooth...Ill see what happens

Good night All

Ive decided I will let two of the Surafec Missile Tubes exposed and seal up the rest of the bays, I want to keep the shape as much as possible.
I have run into a problem in that the doors are not linging up as hoped, I will trim the teeth off and place them after:

Nice view along the hull, The vent holes hsould have been cover behind with a fine mesh but that didnt come to mind at the time

From above it looks great

and from the bow looking aft, the large white area is where the Sail will go, With that infamous Crest

Thanks for looking

Wow! Looks like nice piece of B&Q sausage ;)

I remember one of my first carton ship – French battleship Richelieu.
I’m always impressed by masive internal structure of 'cartonish'
Good work! Waiting for updates

Thanks for the reply Viethold , I couldnt paint to save my life so card models are my favourite...cost is a help too, it helps me save for my insane projects

This is the hull today, Big and strong and looking good

Unfortunately at this time I have noticed a problem with the printing, the sections from now on back are a different shade, pity but Ill live as Im having fun

Back on the bench it was time to make the stand, Nice printed effect

With the tailfin attached, that printer has been to hell and back,

And the rear dive planes installed

Its a fantastic kit, I really appreciate the effort put into designing it, I hope the keep it up

Until next time

oohh..Im really not sure, It was about 1 hour to glue the formers to mounting board, 4 hours of cutting them out, the frame too 3 hours and the skinning to this point has been another 7 hours...

Spread out over a long long time

And now we move on to the screws, Prettu simple but effectivem this is how they came

but after a layer of bronze paint we end up with these

And then installed we have this, Huge and imposing

Looking from the bow to stern

That red and white bump is for Compartemnt 19 where the surviving crew huddled waiting for rescue. Anyone else read "A Time To Die" rough stuff...

Pretty good I think, I will now move onto the Shipwreck Missile Tubes
