Just a quick hello. My name's Dermot and I'm back to the hobby about 2 years now but a newbie around these parts. I'm a 1/72 fan of props, jets and helos plus the occasional armour, ship and spaceship. Got to my first branch meeting last weekend (Dublin) and the welcome was excellent - thanks! Really looking forward to learning more from the great people here and will post as often as I can. Best wishes, Dermot On the bench:1/72 Airfix Gazelle conversion 1/72 Revell F-16A 1/72 Revell Ec-135 Completed BuildsIn the pipeline1/72 Revell F-14D Tomcat diorama

Yup, they made me feel welcome last month too. You're in with a good crowd.

Welcome to the forum Dermot... it was good to see such a turnout on Saturday!
So what spaceships have you done?

Sorry, when I said spaceships I meant the fictional kind! Lurking somewhere in the dark corners of my attic are an MPC/AMT X wing, Tie Fighter and Speeder Bike from Star Wars; all built when I wasn't really focussing on accuracy or finish! I recently bought some of the Revell Star Wars kits (they were on sale) so will definitely give it a go again. And I found a Halcyon Aliens APC I built when I was a student - would like to bring that one back to life if possible. Cheers! Funny that, I was researching (alright...I was flicking randomly) on the net the other day and I found some sites with very good x-wing kits but they were'nt AMT or Revell. Think they were pro-shop or pro-file, or some pro-. Any x-wings for sale in Ireland?

I'm guessing you mean the Pro-Shop X-Wings. Seems to have some electronics to move the wings and canopy etc. From what I've read it's not bad, though the Fine Molds X-Wing seems to be the eilte... J. On the bench - Revell 1:72 F-16B

Be great to see your x-wing Dermot. I have a soft spot for this kit as it was one of the first sci-fi kits I built back in the days of my youth.
Think the fine moulds x-wing is definitely best kit OOB but the 48 scale ones seem rare as hen's teeth.

Yes, the Fine Molds are mighty Fine...
I've done their x-wing, y-wing and the 2 Ties plus one of the Slaves - all in 1/72. Like yours, all in the attic now.... Would kill for the MF, but I'd be killed if I actually brought it home at close on €200
The Aliens APC is a nice simple kit that really cries out for some rough weathering to make it look like it's been through the wars. There's a great review somewhere on this internet thing of one with an interior. If you ever get you hands on the dropship: now that's cool.

Andy / Dermo / Sean It's great that we can finally get a couple of people who are into things sci-fi on this forum, and also at our Dublin meetings. I know Vincent (murfv) is into Star Trek (various versions of the Enterprise in particular), and I personally rather like the idea of Star Trek Klingons, Ferengi and Cardassians - have one of each of the last two in kit form in various stages of construction. I have just purchased a Klingon Bird of Prey on evil bay for 10.50 sterling - bargain! I have heard about the Fine Molds Milennium Falcon - yes, kinda expensive. So are the Polar Lights Enterprises, what with LED's etc to light them up from inside. Have a look at Starship Modeller - an interesting site for all this kind of stuff:- http://www.starshipmodeler.com/Why not bring in a few of your kits into one of the Dublin meets and we can compare phasers and photon torpedoes.... You can definitely include me in this as well, apart from the Tardis I've made a Bird of Prey and Tie Interceptor in my time, and of course have a Galactica lined up ( as does Vincent ). J. On the bench - Revell 1:72 F-16B

Sounds like a plan Philip - will see what I can dig out (i.e. rummage around the attic) ahead of the next meeting. Nice win on the Bird of Prey, BTW. Should I move this thread somewhere more suitable, instead of "New Members"? Is there a sci-fi thread or sub group? Thanks re the Bird of Prey. Kaaaplagh!. On the thread issue:- Yep there is a topic already for this kind of thing. http://www.ipmsireland.com/forum/yaf_topics7_Spacecraft--Science-Fiction.aspxRoy had a thread there recently about a "real" space thingy - a NASA ship, apparently. So - with our more "interesting" spacecraft - let's stop posting here and post new sci-fi stuff there..... (Have a look at the job "The Docktor" did on the Bird of Prey.....) Philip

I'd be up for that too. Don't have anything to build yet, but it would definitely make a nice change to get away from warbirds, which are very time consuming. The only star wars I've seen for sale here are the revell snap fit ones. Any good?

From what i've seen on the kits I've bought and read on the inter'web, the Revell snap ones are accurate-ish, if a little simplified in detail and toy-like; that's not a criticism mind you, and they've got a particular market (and price) in mind. Also, there's no point in comparing them to someone like Fine Molds. Think they may have some still on special offer in Toymaster on Mary/Henry Street if you're keen. Will post some pics over on the Sci-Fi forum soon. On the bench:1/72 Airfix Gazelle conversion 1/72 Revell F-16A 1/72 Revell Ec-135 Completed BuildsIn the pipeline1/72 Revell F-14D Tomcat diorama

We already have, and for quite a while..... ClickyOk, looks like 35th-scale already found it...
If you tell people where to go, but not how to get there, you'll be amazed at the results. George S. Patton This space is for rent.(Sshhh! Don't tell the Revenue Commissioners, the IMF or the Dept of Finance, or they'll tax my stash!)

DeBoss wrote: We already have, and for quite a while..... Ok, looks like 35th-scale already found it... Yeah Roy, Way ahead of ye boy! The sci-fi thread was soooo quiet for so long, I thought I would re-direct folks to it - see my post above of November 1st where I did just that. (Not only 35th scale was directed to that thread by me.....have a look!) Still...The Doktor's posting of his Bird of Prey on the thread, even if not that recent, has to take centre stage! But some of the stuff that the guys have posted might give him a run for his money.... It's fine that a number of the guys have shown an interest in things sci-fi, and promise to bring them along to the Dublin meets. Maybe from that we might be able, by September 2012, to have a REAL competition going on the Sci-fi side...(we only had 1 entry in the figures category, and 2 entries in the non-figures in 2011, which is why I (as Competition Secretary) amalgamated them to ensure that all were actually judged..... your model of the Enterprise got a bronze medal in the event, as I recall - congrats!).... Maybe we can organise a few of the non-Federation craft by next year, to give Cap'n Kirk a bit of a challenge... Philip

There is indeed! (my reference to Cap'n Kirk related to Roy's Enterprise - seems that if the Doktor's Bird of Prey had been in evidence, it would have given him a run for his money, and perhaps downed it with its disruptors........)
But the comp this year had only 3 entries.....That's why we need to get a heightened level in interest in the sci-fi class for 2012 - as far as I am concerned, whether it's Star Wars, Babylon 5, Space 1999, Dr Who, 1950's B movie stuff, the fantasy items from Warhammer, or even the crazy Jap stuff, etc, it's all eligible, and - of course - nobody can tell you that the colours and markings are wrong....
