Got to start on this at the weekend. Not an easy build....lots of parts and very fine (delicate) bits. Plus the plastic is very soft. Very few of the locating pins actually fit in the hole they're meant to go in.... The gun is a mess....bits left off or not square. But it's a technical: some of them looked very beat up! I'm hoping once painted and weathered it'll look the part. The chassis went together a lot better but there is something about black plastic that makes it very hard to see what you're doing. Anyway, progress so far: More in a few days! All comments welcomed and thanks for looking, Sean

Going to be good Sean - technical build too by the looks of it! Look forward to seeing the weathering on this one. Best wishes, Dermot On the bench:1/72 Airfix Gazelle conversion 1/72 Revell F-16A 1/72 Revell Ec-135 Completed BuildsIn the pipeline1/72 Revell F-14D Tomcat diorama

Hi Sean,
Looking good, will be keeping a eye on this.
Are you going to build it in a dio? James

Thanks Gents. It won't be in a diorama: too much effort for my tastes and they take up too much space on a shelf. Not yet sure about the level of weathering. These have been quite mixed in the news reports and pics I've seen. From showroom condition: to pretty beat-up Anyway, here's where we're at so far: Cheers Sean

Painted the rubber seals around the windows, side trims and front grille. Also added the lights. Messed up the paintwork a bit, so it's going to be really weathered now! Also made some progress on the figure.

Sand dust: yes, lots.... Graffiti: no way! or maybe....could it be done with a market, felt tip, pencil, other? What would work other than a paint brush?

The figure looks cool
May be a chisel tip marker, Sharpie or something similar for the graffiti.

Slow progress in the last week, but at least not ready to start making it dirty! Made a mess of the windscreen...again....seemts to be a habit these days. The windows are a clear piece that just fits inside the roof covering the front and side windows. I wanted the side windows open so took the dremel to it... What is it carpenters say? Measure twice, cut once! I should have done better at the measurein....left a 2mm gap at the side of the windscreen so had to make a new one. It's looking a bit glazed, but thats OK. It might even have a few bullet holes before I'm done ;-)

Thanks Pat.
Don't think I'm going to make it this month unless the wearther turns bad and matchs are cancelled... or we're kicked out this week. Had another walkover cos we couldn't field a team on Saturday. Season could yet come to an abrupt end this week. I'm normally just at the meetings from March or April to Aug....but this is my last year in soccer management so should be a more regular attendee through next winter.

It's unusual subject and it should look great after layer of dirt. Just can't help thinking, when looking at the gun lying on the deck, how it was fixed to the vehicle. Surely there must have been some metal frame, or some sort of makeshift platform, otherwise it would just slip from the truck during a few miles of desert drive, not talking about the movement during firing... Made a quick gooogle search and it threw few pictures on which you can see some of the details of how the gun is fitted to the vehicle: ...and here is good site with photos from the workshops. Toyota truck is almost and the bottom of the page. Not trying to be a smartarse here, just think it would be pity not to make it look right, it's attractive model.

Thanks for the advise Filip and it's taken as good constructive criticism in the spirit it was intended. I know what you mean and I have been thinking about it, sort of.... I had seen the photos but the link is new. However, there are versions where the guns are not raised: http://news.webshots.com/photo/2269753800064923513AdtRlh But it is hard to see how they are attached. I might try and make it look welded in place? Also need to fill up with bits of stowage.

It's not criticism at all, Sean. I think that this is cracking model and it would deserve to add that little bit of extra something to make it spot on. The Chinese manufacturer had Toyota kit, so they though, hey, why not to surf on Libya and make a few bob by throwing in that AA gun. Back to that mount... I wonder if it's possible to move that gun a bit, so the rear support is jammed against the front wall of the loading area. This would take the other two gun supports from the tailgate, which might not be able to support the weight of the gun if it sits on it as it does now. You might move that bull bar as well to gain some space. There might be a false floor cut out from thick sheet metal with some angle brackets welded to it and the gun bolted to it. Something like in this picture, without the MG mount. The gun wouldn't be welded to the Toyota bodywork sheet metal, because it will not hold, unless there are holes cut out and the gun fixed to the undercarriage Which would require a lot of work and customization of the vehicle.

Took the simple approach: angled the rear leg so I could move the gun back in the bed and then got the two front legs into the corners. I had the choice of taking off the roll-bars or the back of the seat. According to the instructons the roll-bars were'nt meant to be fitted, but I like the look of them so it was the seat's back support that went.... Thanks for the advice Filip...that works better alright!
