Dear all,
Recently I got an itch about a model I built some 30 years ago so I wanted to build it again. It is a F-16 prototype in red-white-blue that included a spare engine on a trolley and a tractor as far as I remember, 1/72 scale I think. I don't remember that it was marked as YF-16 or from which company it was. I couldn't find that particular vintage kit, only a few YF-16s but different than the one I look for. I also found upgrade kits to F-16XL in red-white-blue scheme but I rather get the original one. I became interested because our airforce was about to or just introduced the F-16A and this was the only model available, cost only about €7. Does anybody know this kit or where it might be purchased? Probably a lot more than €7 nowadays.
If unavailable I might find an old F-16A and a decal set.........

Hi
I remember that kit, it was an old REVELL kit if I remember correctly. It was also released with Dutch air force colours. You can still buy the latter mentioned model kit on eBay in newer boxing (spare engine is in the picture!) Make sure you have your search on "worldwide"
Hasegawa also produce a much better YF-16 kit. The Revell kit is better as a nostalgic memory, the kit would be very poor by today's standards & if your purchasing an old kit then beware of the decals as they may fall apart on contact with water from age.

31 01 2012 Dunno if it's of use, but I have what I THINK is the prototype in 1/48 by Tamiya. Kit number is 61022-1000 and the box art has an F-16 in red, white and blue, tail number 01567. I have two of these so if you want it.... Liam

Thanks Roy, I found it. Thanks telling it is poor standard, I read a bit about it that confirms that, including raised panel lines. My appetite to get it is very low now so I leave it another few years. Dennis

Liam Thanks Liam, Is of use indeed however I think 1/48 jets is too large for my display area, but perfect for props from WW2 etc. I think 1/72 is a nice size for the larger planes. Bought today a SuperHornet instead because of the nice decals. Dennis

Thanks Vinny for the links. They still look nice however I gave it a good think and decided to not buy one, maybe later. I like models with a bit detail and challenge and this doesn't look like it has. I have a few other things lying around (tanks, cars and prop planes) but am now in the mood for modern jets for some reason. Probably because I will visit Holland next month and will go to "our" airbase to spot a few real ones with my son. I might get a modern F-16 later and am looking for some older jets. Dennis

Hoi Dennis, it just clicked with me who you are when you mentioned Holland. I met you after the last meeting when we went to the pub with Jim and George and I showed the various "model" mags on the iPad. You're right to stay clear of that old F-16 kit... it's not very good at all and requires a lot of work to make any way decent. I started an Italeri 1:72 F-16 a few years ago and had to put it aside as it was terrible. I'll finish it some day... and it's going to be a Dutch jet. It'll also be the last 72nd jet I make as it has turned me off that scale so much. Now, those who know me know I have a penchant for sexy Dutch birds ......... and I have on the bench 4 1:48 F-16s (2 Italeri and 2 Kinetic) designated for RNLAF display birds. well, they're more on the back boiler than on the bench as they've been sitting ready for paint for that last year! I really want to get cracking on them again soon but first I'm trying to clear some projects that were started a long time ago. Plus their colour schemes are going to be pretty complex to do... and I want to take my time with them. I aslo have a couple more 48er decals for Dutch F-16s to start some day. You should be very proud of your air force... best looking F-16s in the world! You should get cracking on that Revell Tornado instead... excellent colour scheme! Tot ziens! The 72nd scale Revell F-16's are highly thought off from what I've gathered. Particularly they have an F-16A MLU which is up to date for most European users. I have one that I plan on making a Norwegian aircraft eventually.

The new Revell F-16s are fine but old the one Dennis was after takes a bit more effort than it's worth. This kit was released in 1976 and it was good for its time but needs a lot of work to make a decent looking model as a lot of the details are basic. It will look like an F-16 OOB though so it's up to the modeller to decide how far he wants to go updating it. I'm not familiar with the current Revell F-16s but I know there have been releases based on this old kit that have been updated and new sprues added. From online photos the new kits look very nice. I've only seen one Revell 72 F-16 built in the flesh and I don't know what release it was but it was basic and toy-like... even though the paint job and build was nice. Still, it looked like an F-16. I believe it ended up in a bin.
