Hey everyone,

Just to keep from going insane on an ancient Airfix P-38/Revell A6M5 Zero dual build, I got this teeny Tomcat recently for a single type GB on Britmodeller. This is the first time i've ever strayed Shhh beyond 1/72 - I gave it a go because I knew I would never get a 1/72 Tomcat built in 3 months, with what else is on the bench. And having seen Jason's all black F-14 at D1, I knew this kit was a little cracker (well his was anyway).

Here's some work in progress shots, started in early Jan.

What you get...

Nice looking decals..

And engraved panel lines..

Didn't go too super detail on the cockpit....Bang Head ha, ha....

Followed Jason's advice and finished the wings fully (Future too) before installing - easier than trying to mask them afterwards. And yes, they move together

Slow....

Faster!!

All ready for decaling (and shameless provincial rugby plug)

Kit decals (designed by DACO) went on beautifully...

Even included tiny ones for the ordinance..

Just a wash and weather to go and that will be the first completion of this year!

Thanks for reading and enjoy your modelling.

Great job! When you see the 1c for size comparison....simply stunning on the cockpit. And the Phoenix looks great except for some seam on the nose

Cheers

That cockpit is stunning and so tiny, I don't think I could ever manage that scale.

Those could build into a nice little 'badge' and some of those tiny kits are sometimes molded much cleaner than their larger scale brothers too.

What colours are you using Dermot?
It's a nice little model..I'm doing a 1/48 tomcat soon, we'll stick them side by side at a branch meet and compare size!!!

Thanks Barry - it's Light Gull Grey all over, from 1981 according to the instructions. Revell would have you mix 66% of Stone Grey with 34% White but I tried that before and it turned out Censored So I just went with the Stone Grey on it's own. I just wish Revell would bite the bullet and bring out a range of FS colours...

As for comparing size of our respective 'Kitties, first time for everything I guess!!!

I love the revell aqua colours but it drives me mad when you read on the instructions to mix 33% of this with 60% and 7% of another.
It just seems like a scam to sell more tubs of paint
I'm a painter and I know mixing paint can be a disaster as the smallest miscalculation will give you a completely different shade to what you want

That shade of Grey looks good, but what would I know, that's too new for me.
I have started mixing my own colours a while ago - and since I have started using Mr.Color paints recently I have no choice - and I take it as a part of the fun. Messing with shades, colours and all that makes me feel like an alchemist turning sawdust into a pile of gold.
But even when the exact shade is given in the pot, it'll change shade after some weathering and washes, so I always used lighter shade of the original colour - without throwing in that 'scale efect' theory and some other stuff.

So when we last saw this build back in January, it looked like this..

And with a couple of other builds in the way, this Tomcat sat patiently in my 'to finish' pile. When I finally managed to get myself some of this stuff, I took a deep breath and jumped right in.

And a couple of attempts later, the wash was done. I added the final details of the gear, missiles and the tiniest undercarriage doors i've ever worked on. Also some spot weathering and a flat coat and that was it. And courtesy of my sister-in-law's photo booth set-up (thanks Louise), got some nice pics too. I must admit, I think it looks bigger than 1/144.

Am really happy how this one turned out especially as I'm more of a 1/72 man myself. I can safely say it's probably one of the best builds I've ever done. And cool that a Tomcat is my first completed build of 2012.

Now to finish her /72 big sister!

Thanks for reading.

Nice and dirty. Is that the unit whose tail fin appeared on the beach on the West Coast of Ireland a while ago?
God only know where it is now, last time I've heard of it, there was a talk about scrapping that thingy, anyone knows?

Oh very nice! Hard to believe this is 144 scale. The Flory weathering wash really set it off. You can't go wrong with that stuff... and even if you do you can wash it off!

Well done and thanks for sharing.

That's a good story all right Filip - it washed up on a beach in Cork in 2006 and was found by a retired airline Captain out walking on the beach.

The piece was 10 foot long with unit markings still visible. And while the online rumour mill went into overdrive about "illegal overflights" and "unauthorised reconnaissance", the true story was way more interesting..

The retired airline pilot passed the tail markings and numbers to the US Navy - it belonged to VF-101 (Grim Reapers) and had crashed off the Florida coast in October 2002 - 3 and a half years before it was found. The plane was taking part in ACM and suffered a compressor stall - both crew safely ejected and were picked up. And their jet spun in, probably at a fair rate of knots. And all that time later, a piece of it landed on the coast 4,900 miles away from where it crashed. By all accounts, he got to keep his Tomcat message-in-a-bottle too..

Very nice job Dermot, and it was a pleasure to see it in the flesh, as it were, on Saturday.

That looks more like 1/72 scale the finish is so good. The Jolly Rogers scheme just suits this aircraft so well. How is that Flory stuff to use?

Dermo,

That looks fantasic. The finish makes it look like a larger scale.
