Thanks for the tips Vinny, I might give the hairspray a go. Meanwhile I've been working on the base some more with the airbrush, which I'm finally getting the hang of. The base is painted entirely with Vallejo paints from the airbrush. The first coat was Black followed by Black Grey sprayed in random patterns over the base to give it a faded look. I then 'misted' several different shades of grey over the base to give it a faded, weathered look. The stripe was painted with White Grey, I used some masking tape to get a straight line. I've still have some groundwork to do and I have a choice; I could either put down some sand and then take out some pastels to weather the base further in a desert style or I could just go for some grass.

I've finished the base. I ground down some pastel sticks to provide the groundwork and used the airbrush to paint it a couple of shades of sand. I did try to reach the pink tinged colour of the sand common around the Gulf region but it didn't quite work out so I settled for the traditional look.

That's pretty good. I would dilute that sand paint or use dry pastel dust and dust-up the tarmac around the sand patch to blend those two in and make it look more dirtier ;o) Like if the wind blew some sand over.

Fair play Sean, it's looking excellent! Love how you've done it so that the base looks like just a small section of a larger diorama... J. On the bench - Revell 1:72 F-16B

Looks great Sean but I have to agree with Filip. I think the tarmac in a desert environment would be quite dusty.
Cheers Sean

I'm working on dusting it up at the moment, just getting the hang of making it look natural and not brush on in lines if you get my meaning.
