Cheftain? Doubt we had the fuel to put in one.

Updated and organised. I have no idea which kit (Airfix or Matchbox) reperesents best an Irish Churchill, likewise if they are any good as models. Same goes for the Airfix Scorpion, Bren Carrier and Bofors gun/Tractor.

As for 1/35, that is way beyond my scope. Need our experts to do that one......

If you want to get fussy add these to the 1/35th list;

Uro Vamtac - spanish type of Humvee with GM chasis. This vehicle was tested in small numbers and entered service for a short period of time - NIMIX a spanish Resin producer.
M35A2 loaned to Irish in Lebanon after US withrawal (early 80's) - AFV club
Toyota Land Cruiser - used between Landrover and Nissan series (mig kit but needs to be converted)
Beaverette is available in resin form but out of production and hard to find
Ford Model-T is in plastic
Peerless armoured car can be purchased in Resin but might need the chasis slightly extend
BV-209 All Terrain Vehicle , an odd tracked vehicle (this is new to the Air Defence units) - Firing Line models
Febuary 2012 HobbyBoss Hungarian Toldi Tank 38.M (Landsverk L60 Light Tank)

If i think of more I'll post, if anyone wants info on any arty guns I'll post what I know can be got Angel

The story of the tanks and other armoured vehicles used by the armed forces of the Republic of Ireland (Eire), from independence to the present day. Although the Irish have never used large numbers of armoured vehicles, they have employed a wide and eclectic variety of tanks and armoured cars, from British WW1 vehicles through to the Swedish armoured cars currently in service. This book describes the acquisition and operational use of all such AFVs by the Irish, and includes scale plans of all major types plus details of colour schemes and markings.

I have a few of their other books which are very good and I'll probably pick this up.

Hi Guys

I can promiss you that this book Pat touched on will be excellent, Ralph put alot of time & effort into this book & I can sincerly vouch for that!

For those of you who dont know, Ralph Riccio (a very proud Italian American) is a very interesting & inspiring individual. Fluent in many languages, he had a very interesting & colorful Military carear as an Officer in the US Armed Forces in NATO & he is also a Vietnam veteran! A gentleman by all accounts who worked endlessly to ensure the information & facts in this book were correct & went to great lengths to provide the reader with original & interesting photos!

Ralph made a very extensive trip here in 2008 to cover the facts of the book & It's worth nothing that when Ralph met the Commander of the Cavlary School in the Curragh, The Brass there were very surprised at how much Ralph's Knowledge of the the subject of Irish Armoured vehciles was & this made interesting conversation..

The book will be very impressive, there is some interesting information about the Churchills & Peerless Armoured cars not covered by Karl Martain (another excellent book BTW) & he even managed to squeeze in some info on the new RG-32M. This vehicle had'nt entered service when the first proof read of the book went to the publisher.

I was only talking to Ralph last week & he informed me the book is nearing the shelves very soon & is already in print!

Ignore that picture on your link by the way, Mushroom are sporting this as the intended cover but Ralph has chosen another far better cover for release & he is all too well aware of the inconsistancies in the pictures for all you out there with a sharp eye Drool

..BTW this isn't Ralphs only Irish Military adventure, he's working on another very interesting subject too :d/

For those of you who are interested in Italian Military vehicles in WWII, Ralph has released two other interesting books;
* Squadron Publications (In Action Series), Italian Truck Mounted Artillery (WWII)
* RoadRunner Publications, Italian Tanks & Combat Vehicles of WWII (this is the bible on this subject)
I highly recommend both books on the subject!

stay tuned folks!

Roy :)

I'm glad to hear of this change as the first thing I noticed (and I assume this is what you allude to) when I saw the cover was that the Rolls-Royce Armoured Car illustrated is a 1914 pattern and not the 1920 pattern as used in the service of the Irish Free State.

If I'm honest, had you said this two weeks ago I'd not have known the difference but I saw in WHSmiths this months classic military vehicle mag with AAR1 (Tom Keogh/Danny Boy) on the cover, impulse buy and very interesting read... I defiantly want to build AAR2 (Sliabh na mBan) using the Roden kit.

Just spent an afternoon, that I should have spent doing other things, reading Ralph Riccio's book that is mentioned by Pat.
224 pages of information including many new photos and 1/35th scale drawings.
8 appendices cover everything from service dates,registration numbers,unit insignia and preserved vehicles and where to find them.
Especially usefull to forum members here is the one on "colour equivalents for modellers" by our own Roy Kinsella which includes
a mixing chart for most major paint ranges and covers uniform and equipment.
An excellent companion to Karl Martin's book. So if you missed that one or only want one book on Irish AFV's make it this one.

Good news.
It looks like that this is a must have book even for us who aren't into the Irish Army heavies. Will take a look into Limerick's Eason next time I am in the town /which might take a while/
