two airplanes in one year!
this is the tamiya 1/48 mig 15. Its totally out of box, nothing added at all.
Its the clear edition which I chose to do without the clear parts. (because its all they had in the shop!)

Its painted with grey primer and preshaded with black. Then Alclad Aluminium followed with chrome on some parts of the panels.
Some of the panels were coloured slightly to give a contrast.
The engine is done as above with a whole heap of clear colours to give the burnt metal look based on some pics of the real thing.

Very pretty finish on a Natural metal finish. I particulary like the metallic tones on the engine - would you care to share with us how you did that?
kind regards Brian

Class Finish, you are the Doktor of Alclad and metallic finish.

Well, first prime. Then put an even coat of Alclad pale burnt metal(light gold). You could use chrome for this too.
Next using tamiya clear orange build up an orangy colour base it on wht you can see in pics. Some bits are more orange than others.
Then on the darker parts (like the combustion chambers) a small bit of clear red was used (alclad or tamiya), just to darken things further. Next Alclad Sepia was sprayed lightly over the whole thing, to give some interesting looking tones. Finally on the darkest parts Clear Black (Alclad smoke) was used. This was also used on the tail pipe to dirty it up a bit too.
The exhaust nozle was first done with tamiya buff. Then colours built up without the orange in a similar way as above, though mainly with sepia and smoke. (its hard to see in the pic)
Then the whole thing was given a wash of tamiya buff and white (1:1). When that was dry a light was of black oil.
Hmm.. i think that was it. Its one of these things you do on the fly, looking at pics thinking.. ooh darker here... slight red tones there. But i think thats the jist of it. :)

Star of the Meeting

Lee brought along his new Mig to the meeting of the Dublin Chapter today - definitely the star of the meeting!! Here are some more photographs (thanks Ken):-

Overview of the Model - the table below is courtesy of Starbucks!

Although an out of the box model, it has a removable tail, so we can see the work on the exhaust/engine.

Overall, quite a sight to behold. Those of you hoping to enter the 1/48 out of the box category in Cork (or indeed at the IMMS show in May) - this is what you will have to beat, methinks....

Congrats, Lee. Yet another masterclass in metal finishing.Applause

Philip

Amazing finish fella, I bet it looks even better in the flesh, photos don't do those metallic finishes justice in my opinion.
