Folks
I have been in contact with the Overseas Liaison Officer from IPMS UK with regard to booking display space for IPMS Ireland at Scale Model World 2011. I am planning to request the same area of space as was allocated to us last year(1.2m x 3.65m area) In addition, we need to indicate how many IPMS Ireland members will be in attendance representing our group for the event, so if persons who intending on traveling would kindly let me know so I can get an idea of numbers, that would be a great help.
Thanks
Vincent

Hi Vincent, I'm hoping to go, but it will probably be a day trip on the Saturday, I don't think I can stay the Sunday. I'll know for certain a bit closer to the date... J. On the bench - Revell 1:72 F-16B

Hi there... As this is getting a bit closer I decided to look into it a bit more. Basically, I'd be flying over on the Saturday morning and back on the Saturday evening, as I have to be home for the Sunday. Ryanair can get me to Birmingham for 7:30am on the Saturday, and the last flight back to Dublin is at 7pm, so I'd have to be in Birmingham for around 5:30pm. I've never been to Telford before, can anyone let me know the easiest way to get from Birmingham airport to Telford and back? I'm guessing a Taxi would be quite expensive, are there trains etc? I assume that the Show is on from about 9 onwards, so that would give me from about 9 'til 4 or so at the show, which will hopefully be enough to see at least some of the sights, man the IPMS Ireland table if needed and, of course, use some plastic to buy some plastic! :) Any advice from people who've gone before would be much appreciated! Thanks... J. On the bench - Revell 1:72 F-16B

@jason, I have done the day flight to Telford, and have been up extremely early, red eye etc, you are looking at about £45 pound for a taxi one way to Telford from the Airport, and then £45 back, make sure you look into this though, because you can be stung, i know of some instances of this!!!!. IPMS members can get in about an hour early, which if i recall is about 9am. This year due to some personal circumstances i will not be going, if you want any more info, send me a PM, oh if you are going, be careful with your PLASTIC LIMIT : ). In my experience i felt the day trip was very very rushed, but if its your only choice try it, and see what you think of it. Paul K

Hi Jasonb
Last time I went I was able to get a direct train from Birmingham airport to Telford station and back.
You will need to check the times though. There is a monorail thingy that will take you from the airport terminal to the central train station. The Telford train was direct to Telford station (previously you needed to change trains) which is a 5 minute walk from Grays hotel (you can actually see it from the hotel gate), itself a 10 min walk from the International Centre. At night, and if carrying a lot of boxes, probably better to get a taxi though.
If you tell people where to go, but not how to get there, you'll be amazed at the results. George S. Patton
This space is for rent. (Sshhh! Don't tell the Revenue Commissioners, the IMF or the Dept of Finance, or they'll tax my stash!)

Thanks for the replies lads... That's good to hear about the trains ( as the £90 return taxi cost will be more than the flights! ), I'll have a look into them today. Just realised I can reduce the cost of the flights even more by flying Aer Lingus over there and Ryanair back. Like you said Paul, the day trip isn't ideal, but I'm used to long day trips going to watch football matches in England, and it's my only option, so I may as well give it a go! As for buying too much, at the present I *only* have three kits on my wanted list. The toughest of those to find is the Moebius BSG model ( with PE etc. ) so that's the one I'd most be keeping an eye out for over there. I will only have hand luggage on the aircraft, so I'll have to make sure I don't buy too much! :) J. On the bench - Revell 1:72 F-16B

Jason, I did the day trip a couple of years ago, and it CAN be done in a day..though it is a bit hectic!. I would agree with Paul and Roy that the train might be a good idea, instead of the taxi fare. One suggestion though - if you know what you want to buy (like your Moebius), have a look at the ipms UK website for the list of traders who are going to be there, and try their internet shops over the next week or two. Some (and I suspect most) will accept orders on line, for pick-up at the show. This not only saves post and packing, and your own time browsing, but some of them give a 5% or 10% reduction for such pre-orders. It also means that you won't go to a stand to be told (as I was) that they only brought a couple of that particular kit to Telford and it's gone, but if you come back tomorrow, they might have more in..... One other small point - you might want to do Ryanair over, and Aer Lingus back, since Aer Lingus is more forgiving about sizes and weights of bags, and also allows a small plastic bag as well as the normal carry-on luggage. We were once over in Cambridge (to see Duxford), and flew from Stansted with Ryanair (it's the only option there, unfortunately), and they were forcing ladies in the queue to put their handbags and their duty free from the airport into their carry-on luggage, as they only accept one bag, and when the total didn't fit into their little measuring frames, or weighed too much, they fleeced the people with additional charges. (Apparently, the Ryanair staff are on comission to find excess baggage). Of course, kits take up a lot of space. Resin details and aftermarket PE and decals don't take up much room and don't weigh much ... Philip

Hi Philip, Thanks for the advice, I hadn't thought of ordering online and collecting on the day, that's definitely worth looking into! It'll have to be Aer Lingus over and Ryanair back, as the last Aer Lingus flight to Dublin from Birmingham is at 3 in the afternoon, which means I'd need to be leaving the show at around 12:30. Not much point going if I'm only there for a couple of hours! Ryanair have a flight at 7, so that means I'd only have to leave at around 4-4:30, which isn't too bad. I know what you mean about the cabin baggage restrictions Ryanair have, I'll make sure the bag I bring with me is empty on the way over, and full ( but not too full! ) on the way back! :) J. Well, flights are booked, a return train ticket from Birmingham International to Telford will cost £10, so that's pretty decent. I should be at the show from around 9am until about 3:45, so that's not too bad, I'll run around and look at as much as I can! :) Thanks for all the advice and help, looking forward to it now! J. Guys, just a quick one...
I've been told that most of the folk will stay at home this year and so there will be no car travelling to Telford. Limerick branch will be there in full strength for the whole duration of the show and we will be bringing our kits with us, that's the whole point of being there. There's nothing definite regarding transport as yet, although we have an idea or two how to get all our stuff over there, so please, let's keep building for our IPMS display table to make it success and let's worry about transport latter. Thanks
Filip

15 08 11 Is Vincent Murphy going? Prehaps it might be an idea to get a definitive list of who is going and what they are bringing. Liam

Hi all,
I would hope that we will see plenty of Irish themed subjects on the table at Telford, after all aren't we promoting the builds and skills of "IPMS Ireland", and not only aircraft but figures, armour, vehicles, dioramas etc..
The Irish subject always attracts interest at shows and its a very interesting and colourful area of the hobby.
Come on lads - promote the Irish Subject if your gonna go to Telford. I know there's a BAE Hawk group build going on but I'm sure there's plenty of Irish Builds that would look equally as good on the table.

I will be on the stand for the week-end, except if I cannot outrun the judging press-gang this year(gammy leg)and will bring some bits. If things are a bit sparse I can bring a 1/35th SS-4 Sego trailered ICBM. That fills just under a metre. I also plan to bring a bottle of Powers for the International buffet. Remember how popular we were last year. There should be a couple of others available if we get stuck. As to transport, John Tapsell and I are going to both D1 and Telford so if there is anything we can bring over, bearing in mind its only one way, just ask.

That's a great idea. Still theres more than 1 month between the D1 and Telford... in other words, lots of sleepless nights inbetween to get some stuff ready
