Hi All I'm working on my 1/32 Hawk. It’s still Very RED, but over the next couple of weeks I hope to change that. I’ve used some Aires seats and photoetch. I really want to get to the painting part of this project, because I can’t wait to see how the masking I got for the Finnish Air Force marking will work out. Ken

Hi All Started the paintwork on this project. I could not find the correct colours so I’ve had to mix them myself, I just hope I’ve mixed enough for the second coat of light green. I plan to start the dark green by the weekend. The big problem I have is that one of the landing gear broke, so now I’m thinking I may need to replace all the landing gear with metal ones. http://www.hlj.com/product/SAC32050 I know I could fix but I have found brakes like this will just keep happening. Flying with it, I am stuck again with mine... I got metal landing gear from Aeroclub. It's basically copy of the kit plastic one item of average quality, but the money isn't bad.

This is what it should look like when I've finished. http://www.airliners.net/photo/Finland---Air/British-Aerospace-Hawk/0542905/&sid=a2ecaa4818de58e20c516acbfedd3a02I'll have a look on web to see if I can find a better price for the landing gear.

Nice one Ken!
This is going to be good (if, perhaps, not quick....)
Anyhow, who cares about Telford! ;)

Finished painting the top half. The photo is not great. It makes the dark green look almost black and the light green brown. I think it will look better when I apply the light grey. Still have a lot of work to be done on this project to get it ready for Telford.

That's looking great Ken! Really nice paint job so far. I know the feeling about Telford, I'm rushing through mine a bit, and not being as careful and as methodical as I should be, just to make sure I get it finished! J. On the bench - Revell 1:72 F-16B

Hi All I’m getting there with this hawk. The list of jobs is getting shorter. I’ve ordered landing gear, so that should be here this week. But I can start working on the Finnish Air Force markings. I’m using masking for Miracle Masks. So maybe it would be a good idea for me to put some photo of this process on the forum. I also have to paint the sidewinders. Can someone tell me what are the correct colours? Miracle Masks http://www.freewebs.com/miraclemasks/ Regards Ken

That's such a cool looking paint job, I can't wait to see it in the flesh. Are you bringing it on Sat? J. On the bench - Revell 1:72 F-16B

One way or the other, do come yourself. I'm looking forward to hearing more about these Miracle Masks folks - can you order specific masks from them, if you give them photos and dimensions of what you want, for special jobs?? Even for (smaller) scales, like the one true scale.....? Philip

I don't know if the Sidewinders supplied to Finland are the same color as those used by the U.S but I believe the U.S are finishing theirs in FS 36375; a light grey with a white head.

Hi Jason I will bring the Hawk on Saturday. Philip you can get almost what you want, they do make to order. Some of the mask I got are small, so maybe you could get one for a 1/72 scale. I’ll bring the masks with me on Saturday. (The one true scale is 1/1) Ken

Hi All Almost done. Still have some small jobs to do, like the landing gear and sidewinders. I’ve got the metal landing gear so I’m painting them. I have to say I’m not happy with this project. I made a mess of the paint job and if I was to build this project again. I would not use humbrol paint. The masks worked great and I will use them again. I found them easy to work with. I also printed my own decals from the serial number and the logo on the tail. Ken

It seems everyone is unhappy with their own Hawks, including myself, but what from what I've seen from you and Jason they both look great. I really like the camouflage on this and those masks are something special.

Ken I must say - I think it is an excellent job! (not that I have any gra for these Hawks - gimme a Butcher Bird or a 109 any day.,....) But lessons have been learned for us all - i.e. both you and Fise have advised us to avoid Humbrol paints (at least the more modern formulations...), and also - may I say - that 1:32 might not perhaps be the optimum scale for the future (says he, who is wedded to the "one true scale" .. that is 1/72) I'm very impressed with those masks - thanks for showing them to some of us at the last meeting of the Dublin Chapter. I'd say Miracle Masks might get a few orders as result... I know I will be using my non modelling "plastic card" for them.... You must tell us about how you did your own decals for the serial number and logo - more useful tips and techniques that the rest of us can learn..... Philip

Humbrols are still OK for paintbrush application, but I have tried Mr. Color for some basic spraying and, I think, that this is the way to go. Even during multi layer application - to get full opacity of light colours without primer - they dry out into smooth finish and surprisingly thin film. Well impressed with them so far... I'll see how they will behave during masking and re-masking and some other antics of my modelling lunacy.
BTW like your Hawk, Ken.

BTW like your Hawk, Ken. Filip Looks like a good option for those of us with airbrushes. Any tips on where to get the Mr Color range? (I got a few in Telford last year - a US interiors set - at a stand, but cannot remember who they were!) Do you know of any retailers (other than the dreaded H!)? Thanks, Philip

To find a retailer around here or in the UK is very tricky and after a few attempts I gave up. And got onto a blower to the good old Europe, so my MPM connection in Czechland is my source. But I am planning to spend my pocket money on them in Telford this year. No kits, no rubbish, /although new Italeri Hurricane for some decent price.../ just paints and some spare parts for my airbrushes - to save on shipping and packing.
