Started this last night...

First, a stamp on the inside of the hull indicates the molds at least are from 1975! And I'm thinking mine must be an early kit...the moldings are very crisp with very little flash. Thanks Roy! I've recently done other old Airfix boats and wore out a set of files. (OK, slight exageration)

Just put the hull together so far. This photo doesn't show it, but there will be no filling or sanding required at the bow and minimal along the seam between upper & lower hull. (Lower hull can be omitted if doing a water-line kit)

The deck is not actually attached yet

Cheers

Just under 18inchs long Dermot.

Hull and deck put together and some of the major sub assemblies:

Torpedo tube fittings/doors seem a bit bulky, but all going together very well. The front doors actually work, the rear loading door had to be glued in place. The 2 spare torpedos actually fit into the tubes: I might built it with one coming out of the tube...
I'm going to have to be very careful with painting as the windows/skylights are in place internally. I don't want to knock any out with masking...

Cheers

Thanks John. It is an oldie but a goodie! I'd been looking for one for ages too and was lucky to pick one up from a member here. Did I mention it was just €12 :-) but without instructions. They were easy to source elsewhere though. The kit does show up on ebay regularily but at crazy prices

Been a while since I gave an update and unfortunatly progress has been slow...

Main deck painted and woking on some of the sub-assemblies:

With the bits dry-fitted on deck:

Considering it's age though it's going together quite well. Paints are Humbrol enamels as listed in the instructions but I'm not too sure they look right. Most pics I've seen have a darker deck and lighter sides....

I did finally find time over the few days to start on the hull of this though....it's been sitting idle in the run up to Christmas.

Portholes are still masked and a bit of tidy-up to be done around the edges but basically ready to start adding all the wee bits.

Looking good, it's a handy boat and good size too, I'd say

Thanks Filip,
About 18 inchs long which is a nice size. Some of the finer detail bits I suspect are out of scale and quite a few have seam lines and ejector pin marks that need dealing with but all-in-all it's a nice kit, but time consuming which is in short supply these days.

Hopefully I'll get to post some close-up detail pics tonight

That's coming along nicely and will look good beside your other S-Boat!

Looking forward to more pics too.

Cheers,

Dermot

Some details shots:

It's amazing how many flaws show up in a photograph. Maybe it's just my eyesight|

Anyway, your comments are always welcomed

Enjoy

That's a great bit of work....!! Super

I do hope it will be entered into the ships category at the next Irish Nationals in Shannon in September! (IMHO, it is sure to be a winner.)

If you can, can you bring it along to one of the next Dublin Chapter meetings, as I'm sure we would all love to see it in the flesh.

Congrats on a fine piece of modelling! Applause

That's excellent looking Sean, well done! Those Tamiya kits are great for adding rust here and there, aren't they?

And, reading down through the thread, I'd say it's about 18 inches long, right? ROFL

Thanks for the comments guys. I will bring it along to the next meeting I manage to attend....just not sure when that will be. Not sure about the Nationals though: I've seen how those judges crawl all over everythnig ;-) but I will keep the instructions this time just in case.

The Tamiya weathering set is great. I have had a sand one for ages but the new one with rust and metalics is the buisness.
And I'd estimate the length at closer to 45.7sm Jason :-)

Cheers
Sean
