Hello all,

Can anyone tell me if the Irish Army 25 pounder Artillery Gun has the wheels resting on the rim of the rotatiing plate or are they slightly hangining out over the rim when in the firing position??

Found Pics on the net but not sure about the positioning...

Any help welcomed.

thanks

alan.

OK get ready Happy Banana

I think the base in this case might be called a "Traverse Wheel" (I could be corrected on this later)

The gun could be fired in 2 positions,
firstly in the "quick action" mode without the base.

Secondly (and primarily) when the gun was fired in the standard firing position the gun sat ON the base plate to stop the gun sinking into the earth from the recoil.

In this position the wheels sat on the outer rim of the Traverse Wheel (base).
The gun could also be rotated in different directions as the wheels could turn whilst sitting on this rim aiding movement for the crew.

..great weapon system, the biggest thing I ever fired, a remarkable experience!

hope this helps Al

Roy :)

By coincidence this morning I happened to be looking at a book I have: 'The FCA An Illustrated history'. It's in Easons at the moment. On page 96 there is a picture of a 25 pounder on the traverse wheel. The tyre does indeed seem to hang over the edge. There's also a good photo of the wheel attached to the gun on page 126. It's clear that the rim is narrower than the tyre so it must overhang. Get to Easons and browse for yourself. Hope that helps.

Bang on Liam :)

I'll clarify this a little more..
The tyre is quite wide in appearance on the irish 25pdr's,
it does indeed sit on the outer rim of the Traverse Plate but over-hangs at about 40-50% giving the appearance the wheels are outside the base.

Almost always the outer tyre would be in contact with the surface (ie earth) but would not be holding the weight of the entire gun unit.

The whole idea of the traverse plate is to ensure the gun doesn't sink into the earth during firing Book

Don't forget as mentioned earlier the gun can be fired in the quick action without being attached to the plate.

..it's a crew of 6 if I remember correctly Al :)
